Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. You'll find 2721 articles related to music and video piracy (with special attention to articles from Belgium and the Netherlands) originating from 526 unique (web)sources. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

Online verspreiding muziek moet vlotter

Volgens de EU-commissaris voor mededinging Neelie Kroes is er goodwill om de online distributie van muziek makkelijker te maken. Muziek via het internet: slechts een minderheid van de jongeren wil ervoor betalen. Maar het lijdt geen twijfel dat het wereldwijde web ongekende mogelijkheden biedt om muziek te verspreiden. Daarom riep de EU-commissaris Neelie Kroes vorig najaar een ronde tafel samen om te zien wat er fout liep met de onlinehandel. In het verlengde daarvan wou ze dat de consument beter gebruik zou kunnen maken van de mogelijkheden.

Muziek heeft haar prijs

Cd's vind je tegenwoordig overal: in multimediawinkels en grootwarenhuizen, in gespecialiseerde platenwinkels én op het internet. Maar wie is het goedkoopst? Wij noteerden de diverse prijzen voor de Album Ultratop 10. Winkelketen Makro komt als grote winnaar uit onze steekproef. Liefst zeven van de tien cd's uit de Ultratop 10 -de lijst van populairste cd's in ons land- vindt u er tegen de laagste prijs. Gemiddeld telt u er 13,19 euro neer voor een cd. De tweede plaats is voor MediaMarkt (gemiddeld 13,60 euro). Carrefour staat op drie (gemiddeld 14,17 euro). Opvallend genoeg zijn de winkels die cd-verkoop als hun core business zien, de duurste.

Downloaden is altijd goedkoper, maar...

Downloaden is doe-het-zelfwerk en vereist de nodige hardware. Behalve een computer met internetaansluiting hebt u een account nodig op een website. Om een cd te downloaden bij iTunes moet u ook de muziekspeler op uw computer installeren. Eens de download compleet is, moet u hem nog branden naar een cd of kopiëren naar uw mp3-speler. Dat alles drijft de uiteindelijke prijs op.

Lawyer: RIAA must pay back all $100M it has collected

Harvard Law professor Charles Nesson has now gotten involved in two more file-sharing lawsuits, including the Jammie Thomas retrial in Minnesota. But it's in the other, lesser-known case, that Nesson and a former student demand the RIAA pay back all $100 million it has collected in settlement money over the years.

Harvard prof tells judge that P2P filesharing is "fair use"

Wholesale copying of music on P2P networks is fair use. Statutory damages can't be applied to P2P users. File-swapping results in no provable harm to rightsholders. These are just some of the assertions that Harvard Law professor Charles Nesson made last week in his defense of accused file-swapper Joel Tenenbaum. In court filings, Nesson spelled out his defense strategy, which doesn't appear to involve claims that his client "didn't do it." Instead, Nesson argues that it doesn't matter if Tenenbaum copied music; such noncommercial uses are presumptively "fair" and anyone seeking to squeeze file-swappers for statutory damages is entitled to precisely zero dollars.

Nederlands grootste Usenet portal FTD heeft na een gesprek met BREIN haar gebruik van zogenaamde NZB-links gestaakt. Dat houdt in dat er niet meer rechtstreeks naar illegale content gelinkt kan worden en het downloaden niet langer automatisch begint. De site gaat echter nog steeds systematisch en structureel over illegale content op Usenet.
