Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

Canadian ISPs stand up for content blocking, throttling

Canadian regulators have asked whether network neutrality rules are needed, and at least some ISPs and most content owners have just said "no"—Canadian ISPs should have the right to throttle P2P uploads, block certain websites, and implement "graduated response" rules. (...) "Certainly policies that limit the consumers access to P2P sites that distribute large volumes of unauthorized content would be controversial," says the group, "but we believe that it is in the interest of both ISP's and content producers to examine such alternatives carefully and act to the degree it can be determined that such content is not authorized for redistribution."

John Kennedy, Chairman and CEO of IFPI, has given evidence in the trial of The Pirate Bay, in Stockholm, outlining the "significant damage to the music industry as a whole" that the unauthorised service is causing. (...) Kennedy made a clear distinction between the functions of The Pirate Bay and general search engines such as Google. If you type 'Coldplay' into Google, there will be 40 million results, made up of press stories, links to legal download stores, concert reviews and a multitude of different links. If you go to The Pirate Bay you will get less than 100 results, all of which will give you access to illegal music, illegal movies and artwork." He said that Google, unlike The Pirate Bay, has been working cooperatively with the music industry on a daily basis, helping curb the supply of copyright infringing content.

U2-lek blunder van Universal

De Australische vestiging van Universal Music heeft downloads per ongeluk vroegtijdig verspreid, beweert Rolling Stone (...) Universal heeft volgens het Amerikaanse muziekblad Rolling Stone vorige week downloads in hoge kwaliteit te koop aangeboden op de Australische website Getmusic.au. Dus bijna twee weken voor de officiële start van de verkoop. Het label ontdekte de fout pas na twee uur, te laat om grootschalige verspreiding op het web te voorkomen.

Eircom to block Pirate Bay

Eircom, Ireland's biggest internet provider, has agreed to block access to any website the music industry says is responsible for illegal music-swapping. In a letter sent to ISPs across the country last week, the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) disclosed the deal and warned others to follow suit or face legal action.

How piracy paved the way in Sweden

The case against the founders of Piratebay.org--one of the world's three major BitTorrent sites--is expected to last 13 days, which would make it Sweden's longest-ever trial dealing with copyright issues. The case is the result of the search and seizure of servers by Swedish police at Pirate Bay's offices in May 2006. For years, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and the Motion Picture Association of America have depicted Sweden as rife with digital piracy. On a mash-up created with Google Maps, Pirate Bay itself shows where file-sharing users are located: most are in China (22 percent) and the U.S. (11 percent). Sweden (2 percent) is clearly over-represented, which might partly be explained by the fact that broadband connections are widely used throughout the country.

Rechtszaak The Pirate Bay van start gegaan

In totaal zijn door de Zweedse justitie vier personen aangeklaagd: de torrentsite-beheerders Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde en Fredrik Neij, en geldschieter Carl Lundstrom. P2p-onderzoekers vrezen 'implosie' Bittorrent

Bittorrent is een p2p-protocol dat echter wel gebruik maakt van centrale servers voor het bijhouden van de torrents. Raynor Vliegendhart, onderzoeker van het Tribler P2P Team bij de technische universiteit van Delft, kwam bij een onderzoek tot de conclusie dat Bittorrent heel sterk afhankelijk is van The Pirate Bay. Hiervoor bekeek hij in een periode van ongeveer een jaar 283.031 torrents met in totaal 52.634.778 peers, en hiervan bleek meer dan de helft via The Pirate Bay te lopen.

TorrentSpy renews legal campaign against MPAA

On Tuesday evening, TorrentSpy filed an appeal to overturn a judgment issued by U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper. Last May, Cooper ordered TorrentSpy, which shut its doors as a result of the legal fight with the Motion Picture Association of America, to pay nearly $111 million in damages to the MPAA for infringing the copyright of thousands of films and TV shows. EU wil providers illegale downloads laten opsporen

Het voorstel komt van de Spaanse europarlementariër Manuel Medina, en het is niet de eerste keer dat een dergelijk idee wordt geopperd. Ondermeer in Frankrijk gingen er al stemmen op om providers als 'politieagenten' te verplichten op te treden.
