Music Industry, Movie Studios Warn Colleges on Piracy

The associations representing movie studios and music labels are warning some 40 college presidents that their students are using their high-powered networks to steal copyrighted entertainment and urging them to take "immediate action." (...) The groups say students are starting to turn in larger numbers to new programs, such as Direct Connect, MyTunes and OurTunes -- which the groups call "well-known hacks of the iTunes music store -- to swap music and movies across LANs without ever accessing the public Internet.

20690 mp3-piraten vermaand

In 2005 stuurde de Belgische poot van IFPI, de internationale federatie van de platenindustrie en een belangrijke speler in de strijd tegen piraterij, niet minder dan 20.690 waarschuwingsberichten uit naar mensen die illegale mp3's aanboden via het internet. Dat is bijna een vertienvoudiging. In 2004 ging het nog om 2.257 waarschuwingsbrieven. Over de hele lijn is muziekpiraterij gedaald in België. In totaal werden er vorig jaar 210 dossiers geopend tegen muziekpiraten.

IFPI neemt LAN-party's in het vizier

IFPI, de koepel van Belgische platenfirma's, had in 2005 een druk jaar. De organisatie verstuurde bijna 21.000 waarschuwingen over illegale muziekbestanden, sloot 130 nieuwsgroepen af en viel op één LAN-party binnen. Maar IFPI is positief: namaak-cd's zijn op een terugweg en de organisatie ziet veel heil in legale downloaddiensten. (...) Vaak staan illegale muziekbestanden ergens in het buitenland, maar in 2005 stuurde IFPI toch 251 ingebrekestellingen naar Belgische internetaanbieders over materiaal dat op hun servers resideerde. Dat is een stijging van 40 procent ten opzichte van 2004. Sinds kort wordt elke ingebrekestelling automatisch doorgestuurd naar het parket, wat de kans verhoogt dat er juridische gevolgen aan hangen.

Verwilghen pakt piraterij en namaak aan

Marc Verwilghen.Minister van Economie Marc Verwilghen (VLD) wil de strijd tegen namaak en piraterij opvoeren. Hij werkt daarom aan twee wetsontwerpen die een beter reglementair kader moeten scheppen om de productie en commercialisering van namaakgoederen doeltreffender tegen te kunnen gaan. "Namaak en piraterij slaan niet enkel op merkkledij, luxegoederen en de film- en muziekindustrie. Ook andere economische sectoren worden erdoor getroffen."

Studios, RIAA target student piracy

The advocacy organizations for the film and music industries on Thursday unveiled their latest initiative aimed at staunching piracy on university computer networks. To launch the initiative, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) sent letters to presidents of 40 universities in 25 states informing them of piracy problems on their schools' local area networks and asking for immediate action to stop it.

Music Piracy Bill Faces French Parliament

The French law that would require Apple Computer and other companies to open their music offerings to other companies' devices is scheduled for parliamentary debate next week. (...) Apple said it was considering leaving the French market when the National Assembly approved the bill last month. Now, Sun Microsystems and the Free Software Foundation in France are also opposing it, according to the report.

Nog veel werk in strijd tegen illegaal downloaden

"De toekomst is veelbelovend, maar daarom niet rooskleurig", aldus directeur Marcel Heymans. Afgelopen jaar zijn er verscheidene acties gevoerd tegen het illegaal verspreiden en uitwisselen van muziekopnames via het internet. Maar er worden steeds nieuwe manieren gevonden om illegale reproducties van muziek aan de man te brengen.

Piracy worse than child pornography

The new look Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) seems to be giving the world an unusual moral code. Details of the upgraded act, which has the blessing of the music and film industry and the Bush administration, are now coming to light. It appears that the DMCA will have a maximum sentence of ten years inside for the crime of software and music piracy. It will also give the FBI the powers to wiretap suspected pirates.

Skype koopt honderdduizenden nummers als beltonen

Skype gaat honderdduizenden muzieknummers aanbieden als beltonen. De online telefoniedienst heeft daarvoor een deal gesloten met drie grote muziekuitgevers. De deals zijn gesloten met EMI, Sony en Warner. Daarnaast is een overeenkomst gesloten met een Britse organisatie die licentievergoedingen incasseert en deze verdeelt onder de rechthebbenden.

Nederlanders: geen probleem met 'illegaal downloaden'

Driekwart van de Nederlanders heeft geen problemen met het downloaden van muziek, films of games. Wel vindt 40 procent het downloaden van dergelijke bestanden 'diefstal'. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van internetaanbieder Planet Internet, uitgevoerd door Intomart/Gfk. (...) Het downloaden van muziek en films is inderdaad niet bij wet verboden, bij games ligt dat echter anders. "Het downloaden van games is niet toegestaan", aldus Kuik. [Opgelet: Situatie in Nederland!]

Helft Nederlanders downloadt probleemloos 'illegaal'

Bijna de helft van alle Nederlanders die wel eens bestanden downloaden doet dit 'illegaal'. Driekwart van de Nederlanders zegt hiertegen geen morele bezwaren te hebben, al ervaart een grote groep het wel als diefstal. (...) Stichting de thuiskopie legt beslag op beverwijkse bazaar

Stichting de Thuiskopie heeft afgelopen zondag op de Beverwijkse Bazaar, ook wel bekend als de "Zwarte Markt", beslag gelegd op alle koopwaar van een handelaar in computertoebehoren. De Stichting kreeg daarbij assistentie van een gerechtsdeurwaarder en de Beverwijkse politie. (...) In het verleden hadden opsporingsmedewerkers van Stichting de Thuiskopie meerdere malen geconstateerd dat de handelaar in kwestie onder meer blanco CD's en DVD's te koop aanbood, waarover de verschuldigde thuiskopievergoeding niet was afgedragen.

Congress readies new digital copyright bill

For the last few years, a coalition of technology companies, academics and computer programmers has been trying to persuade Congress to scale back the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Now Congress is preparing to do precisely the opposite. A proposed copyright law seen by CNET News.com would expand the DMCA's restrictions on software that can bypass copy protections and grant federal police more wiretapping and enforcement powers.

RIAA federal lawsuits include 10 from N.C.

As in the past, the RIAA had subpoenaed names from Internet Service Providers. A spokesman for the association said it tries to negotiate settlements before it files lawsuits naming individuals. The association has filed more than 18,000 suits against individuals since September 2003, resulting in 4,300 settlements. (...) Despite a string of legal victories and years of lawsuits targeting thousands of teens, college students and others who use their computers for amassing music collections, the RIAA is still struggling to put the digital genie back in the bottle.

Malaysia: KL takes anti-piracy fight to the malls

In a landmark legal move, Malaysia's recording industry has filed lawsuits against shopping malls renting premises to vendors of pirated wares. The move came as the country stepped up its crackdown on movie and music piracy, ahead of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's trip to the United States next month, and amid pressure that stems from ongoing Washington-Kuala Lumpur trade talks.

EMI sees download sales jump 150%

Record company EMI has seen its revenues from digital music downloads increase by 150% over the past year. The world's third largest record company predicted that the jump would help its annual profits rise by 12%. EMI added that overall turnover should rise by approximately 4%, led by strong sales from its key acts including Coldplay, Gorillaz and Robbie Williams.

BitTorrent battles over bandwidth

Users on the web will visit a download site and pull the data onto their computers. Many users can be served at once but, if demand is huge, users will effectively have to queue up and wait their turn. But there is another way to get hold of content and it has caused a nightmare for the music industry of late, with users sharing content amongst themselves, their peers. (...) The more users who download the file, the more places there are for other users to get it. This reduces the likelihood of bottlenecks, and is a very efficient way of distributing files across the net. (...) Recent estimates say that around a third of all internet traffic is based around BitTorrent. (...) Some internet service providers think this is unacceptable. Recently BT began clamping down on so-called "broadband hogs", by starting to enforce a 40GB monthly limit.

Brein haalt opnieuw Bittorrent-site uit de lucht

Torrentit.com, dat voorheen ook bekend was als 123torrents.com, werd onderhouden door een 20-jarige man uit Helmond. Op de site werden torrent-links aangeboden voor het downloaden van films, muziek en games. Volgens Brein had de site ongeveer 27.000 gebruikers. Op last van Stichting Brein is de verdachte deze week gestopt met zijn site. (...) Omdat het niet de eerste keer is dat de Helmonder door Brein uit de lucht is gehaald, stapt de auteursrechtenorganisatie mogelijk nog naar de rechter om een schadevergoeding te eisen. De veroorzaakte schade loopt snel op tot tienduizenden euro's, meent Brein.

ASEAN ministers tackle new strategies against piracy

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expected to draw up new strategies to combat Asia's worsening music and video piracy during the first joint anti-piracy workshop of the ASEAN, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Optical Media Board of the Philippines (OMB). (...) An ASEAN report noted that 67 percent of seized pirated optical discs worldwide in 2004 came from Asia. This included 99 percent of pirated VCDs and 73 percent of pirated DVDs.

[VIDEO] Disney to put TV shows online

Walt Disney Co.'s ABC Television will offer some of its most popular shows, such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," for free on the Internet in a two-month trial, the company said Monday. Advertising revenue will support the trial run on ABC.com (...) "Commander in Chief" and "Alias" along with "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" will be available on the Web in May and June, starting the day after they are first broadcast. (...) ABC sells digital downloads of its highest-rated TV shows for the popular iPod music and video player, while other networks have been testing online and video-on-demand formats for airing shows soon after they first appear on broadcast TV.

Brein ziet handel in illegale dvd's teruglopen

Het aanbod van illegale kopieën op de Nederlandse markten is relatief laag, concludeert stichting Brein na een bezoek aan een vlooienmarkt in Limburg. (...) Brein voert sinds een jaar of drie regelmatig controles uit op markten en beurzen in het land. "Vijf jaar geleden werden er nog honderden of duizenden illegale cd's en dvd's verkocht. Sinds we structureel zijn gaan controleren is dat hard teruggelopen."

Antipiraterij-actie op CD- beurs te Doornik levert bijna 1000 illegale bootlegs op

Op zondag 2 april werden tijdens een CD- beurs in Doornik controles uitgevoerd door speurders van IFPI Belgium. Zij stelden vast dat een vijftal standen illegale reproducties van muziekopnamen verkochten. In totaal werden door de lokale politie 607 CD's en 307 DVD's in beslag genomen, waarvan 21 DVD-r waren. Het betrof allemaal illegale bootlegs van artiesten en groepen zoals U2, The Beatles en Coldplay. Bootlegs bevatten meestal illegale opnames van concerten, maar ook niet-uitgebrachte studio-opnames of ongeautoriseerde remixen.

Huge DVD piracy factory uncovered

The Metropolitan Police's film piracy unit found more than 60 DVD copying machines and 30,000 blank discs in the search of the east London premises. (...) Officers said the factory in an industrial estate in Leyton was capable of producing 2,700 DVDs an hour. (...) The raid was a joint operation between the film piracy unit, trading standards and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact).

Brein haalt wederom p2p-sites offline

Stichting Brein heeft de afgelopen twee weken ervoor gezorgd dat zes websites rond p2p offline zijn gehaald [waaronder movieget.nl en torrents4you.com]. De sites publiceerden torrent-links naar films, muziek en games. (...) "Legaal internetaanbod moet een kans van slagen krijgen", zegt Tim Kuik van Brein. "Wij stellen paal en perk aan het illegale aanbod op internet, want tegen gratis illegaal aanbod valt niet eerlijk te concurreren."

Pirate CD 'kingpins' cop a plea

A pair of California men pleaded guilty this week to what prosecutors describe as the largest CD manufacturing piracy scheme ever uncovered in the US. Ye Teng Wen (AKA Michael Wen), 29 and Hao He (AKA Kevin He), 30, both of Union City, California admitted the mass production of nearly 200,000 pirated music and software CDs. (...) Ye and Hao were arrested after agents seized 500,000 pirated music, software, and movie CDs, and DVD and more than 5,500 stampers during raids of 13 locations in California and Texas as part of Operation Remaster last October.

File-sharers face legal onslaught

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is taking legal action against nearly 2,000 song-swappers in 10 countries. (...) a report suggests that illegal downloads are continuing to grow despite the risk of lawsuits. Research firm XTN data said that illegal downloads in the UK have increased by three percent to 28% of music downloads since last September.

Stichting de Thuiskopie haalt winkel leeg

Dit weekend is Stichting de Thuiskopie in actie gekomen tegen een winkel in Rotterdam waar blanco informatiedragers (met name DVD's en CD-r's) werden aangeboden. Hierover was geen thuiskopievergoeding afgedragen. Onder toezicht van een deurwaarder werden in totaal ruim 32.000 illegale schijfjes uit de schappen gehaald. De ingenomen dragers zullen vernietigd worden. In december 2005 is de betreffende winkelier al met Stichting de Thuiskopie overeengekomen dat hij zijn handel zou staken en achterstallige thuiskopievergoedingen zou betalen.

Crazy song makes musical history

Crazy by Gnarls Barkley has made pop history as the UK's first number one song based on download sales alone. Until this month, download sales could only count towards a chart position if the song could also be bought in shops. But under new rules, downloads can be counted as long as physical copies go on sale the following week. The song, used in ads for Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show, has been downloaded more than 31,000 times on all internet sites, a spokesman for HMV said.

Nederlanders kopen minder muziek online dan Amerikanen

De Nederlandse markt deed het in 2005 met een daling van 14 procent relatief slecht en komt nu op de twaalfde plaats van de omzetranglijst uit. De omzet uit digitale muziek bedroeg 2 procent. Ter vergelijking: in de Verenigde Staten is dat inmiddels 9 procent. Nederlandse platenmaatschappijen genereerden een omzet van 197 miljoen euro bij consumentenbestedingen van 345 miljoen euro.
