Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. You'll find 2721 articles related to music and video piracy (with special attention to articles from Belgium and the Netherlands) originating from 526 unique (web)sources. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

Free Record Shop biedt volgende week de film ,,Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'' aan als downloadbare film. Het is volgens het bedrijf voor het eerst dat een film op hetzelfde moment als download en als dvd verschijnt. (...) Opmerkelijk is dat de koper ook eigenaar blijft van de film. (...) De prijs voor een film bedraagt tussen de 10 en 12 euro. Een film die pas op dvd uit is, zoals Harry Potter, kost 15 euro.

Omzet van de muziekindustrie blijft dalen

De omzet van de Belgische muziekmarkt is vorig jaar opnieuw gedaald. Illegale downloads en het kopiëren van cd's zijn volgens de vereniging van muziekproducenten (IFPI) de belangrijkste oorzaken van de neerwaartse trend. De Belgische muziekindustrie boekte vorig jaar een omzet van 123,5 miljoen euro. Dat is 6,3% minder dan in 2004. Opvallend is dat er wel 1% meer exemplaren (cd's en downloads) verkocht zijn.

Digital formats continue to drive the global music market

Global digital music sales figures are being officially reported for the first time today as part of IFPI's total world music sales statistics showing continuing growth in online and mobile music worldwide. Record company trade revenues from digital sales globally nearly tripled in value, from $400 million to $US 1.1 billion in 2005. The total number of digital single tracks downloaded online or to mobile phones rose to 470 million units, up from 160 million in 2004. The US, Japan, UK, Germany and France are the top five digital markets. In general, countries with a greater percentage of digital sales are the strongest markets for music sales overall.

China makes antipiracy moves

Long the music-piracy capital of the world, China is changing, or so hopes the global music industry. The group that represents the world's major music companies today praised the Chinese government's efforts to stamp out CD and DVD piracy. It's the "dawn of an equitable internet", says French culture minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. Computer illiterate father sued for music piracy

A single, unemployed father of four is being sued by seven record companies for internet music piracy, according to Hong Kong's Sunday Morning Post. 54-year-old Yeung Chun-Choi, however, attests that he doesn't even know how to turn on his computer. (...) Chun-Choi lives off state benefits, and explained that the computer was given to the family by social services and used by his children for homework. The case comes as a result of a piracy crackdown last year by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. Canadese muziekorganisatie ondermijnt claims over p2p

Regelmatig verschijnen er onderzoeken die claimen dat het downloaden van muziek via p2p-netwerken de industrie schaadt. Even zo vaak zien rapporten het levenslicht waarin wordt uitgewezen dat het downloaden van muziek geen effect heeft op de muziekindustrie en dat juist p2p-gebruikers de grootste muziekkopers zijn. De bron is meestal eenvoudig te raden: organisaties die opkomen voor de rechten van de muzikanten en de industrie zoals de RIAA en de Buma/Stemra zien vooral de nadelen, terwijl buitenstaanders de negatieve invloed betwijfelen of tegenspreken. Deze buitenstaanders krijgen sinds kort steun uit een onverwachte hoek, namelijk de Canadese belangenorganisatie voor de muziekindustrie. De Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) heeft deze week namelijk een vuistdik rapport gepubliceerd dat de reguliere claims vanuit de muziekindustrie juist weerspreekt.

Politie valt binnen op LAN-party en treft 150.000 illegale bestanden

De party was gestart op vrijdagavond en zou doorgaan tot zondagmiddag. Er was een twintigtal deelnemers aanwezig op het moment van de inval. De politie nam vijftien pc's en vijf servers in beslag.

Operation "Sanremo Plus": 368 CD burners and 17 arrests in one week nationwide raids

Italian Fiscal Police (GdF), FPM (federation against music piracy) and SIAE (Italian Authors society) announced the final results of Operation "Sanremo Plus", a one week nationwide intensive wave of police raids during the most known TV music show in Italy. MSN is genoodzaakt de prijzen voor zijn betaalde muziekdienst te verhogen. Sommige singles gaan 1,49 euro kosten, in plaats van 99 cent. In een mail aan zijn klanten zegt MSN genoodzaakt te zijn de prijzen aan te passen omdat de 'kosten in de muziekindustrie zijn gestegen'. Piracy crippling Canadian music industry

The Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA), an organization that promotes the interests of Canadian record companies and artists, reported today that net music sales in Canada declined by $23 million, or 4 percent, to $608.7 million in 2005. Brein eist 50.000 euro van internetpiraat

De site Blacktorrent bevat een illegaal aanbod van meer dan 300 bestanden met films, muziek en games. De ongeveer 4500 gebruikers werden verplicht regelmatig contributie te betalen. De eigenaar van de bittorentsite is geen onbekende van Brein. Hij werd in 2002 al veroordeeld (...) Desondanks richtte de man vorig jaar de bittorrentsite Zerocool op. Deze werd in november vorig jaar op last van Brein door de service provider afgesloten. De houder staakte volgens de auteursrechtwaakhond zijn illegale activiteiten niet, maar verhuisde de site naar een andere provider en ging door onder de naam Blacktorrent.

Betalende downloaders gedupeerd door muziekindustrie
