Fiscal police raid on four radio stations uncovers wide illegal downloads from P2P
The Fiscal Police (GdF) from Bari, assisted by the Federation against music piracy, FPM, operated a major raid involving four radio stations. The raid, originally aimed to verify the authorization for broadcasting, uncovered a wide use of illegal downloaded files from internet.

Music Industry Files New Lawsuits In Ongoing Enforcement Against Online Theft

Donner: voorlopig geen heffing op mp3-spelers
Er komt vooralsnog geen thuiskopieheffing op mp3-spelers en recorders met harde schijf. Dat heeft minister Donner van Justitie in de Tweede Kamer gezegd. (...) Downloaden voor het goede doel
Een samenwerking tussen hulporganisatie Novib en muziekdienst Download.nl resulteert in Download Day: legaal muziek downloaden voor het goede doel. De Novib-campagne Make Trade Fair wil de aandacht vestigen op eerlijke wereldhandel, die ontwikkelingslanden in staat moet stellen te concurreren met andere economieën.

Maker p2p-mediacenter voorbereid op stappen Brein
Brein houdt zich nog op de vlakte, maar de makers van de Lamabox zijn voorbereid op eventuele juridische acties. De Lamabox is een p2p-apparaat voor in de huiskamer. De Lamabox is kort gezegd een mediacenter met een harde schijf en eventueel een dvd-brander, voorzien van de nodige open-sourcesoftware. Het bijzondere is dat de makers het kastje standaard installeren met p2p-technologie, waarmee een verbinding met alle grote p2p-netwerken mogelijk is. Hierdoor kunnen klanten via bijvoorbeeld Bittorrent films downloaden en direct op de tv afspelen.

Music-biz wants in on EU data retention laws
The music and entertainment industry is demanding that the European Parliament extend the scope of EU anti-terror laws, to help them prosecute illegal internet pirates. (...) The Creative and Media Business Alliance (CMBA) - representing companies such as Sony BMG, Disney, EMI, IFPI, Universal and MPA - wrote a letter to all MEPs last week, asking them to support amendments that would broaden the scope of the legislation.

Stichting de Thuiskopie beboet handelaren tijdens HCC Dagen
Stichting de Thuiskopie heeft tijdens de HCC Dagen tegen vier handelaren proces-verbaal opgemaakt wegens het niet betalen van de kopieerheffing. (...) De hoogste boete die dit weekeinde is uitgeschreven, is 175.000 euro. Vorig jaar was de Thuiskopie ook aanwezig op de HCC Dagen. Toen liep een handelaar tegen de lamp met 600.000 illegale dvd's.

Young 'prefer illegal song swaps'
The report by Jupiter Research suggests European consumers who download music from illegal file-sharing websites outnumber those using legal services. It says illegal networks are used three times as much as legal ones. It also warns that file-sharers, particularly young people, have little concept of music as a paid commodity.

Kazaa Must Screen Illicit Downloads
The operators of the Kazaa file-sharing service have until December 5 to update their software with a filter to screen out copyrighted material or else face the prospect of being shut down. The filter will prevent users from trading files containing 3000 keywords selected by record companies, including the names of popular artists and songs. The filter can be updated every two weeks to include the latest and most popular releases, the International Federation for the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said in a statement.

LamaBox: DVD Video recorder with Peer to Peer support and HDD
During a Dutch exhibition a Dutch company has announced the Lamabox. According to the company this is the first media player with full Peer to Peer (p2p) support which can be connected to the TV and the internet and play and download movies and music. The Lamabox supports Edonkey, Bittorrent, Kazaa (FastTrack), Gnutella and Overnet.

Dutch Court Orders Lycos To Reveal Client's Identity
The Dutch Supreme Court on Friday ordered Internet company Lycos to reveal the identity of a client in a benchmark decision on privacy that copyright groups said would facilitate prosecution of illegal swapping of music and movies online. The country's highest court ruled that Lycos wrongly protected the identity of a user who anonymously posted slanderous allegations against an Internet postage stamp dealer on a member site.

Digitale muziek lenen bij de bibliotheek
,,Het is nog niet echt duidelijk welke invloed de populariteit van mp3 en downloaden precies op het uitlenen van cd's en dvd's uit de bib heeft.'' Maar de toenemende digitalisering doet bibliotheken nadenken over hoe ze bezoekers aan zich kunnen binden. In sommige landen zijn al projecten opgestart waarbij bezoekers digitale muziektracks kunnen uitlenen.

International recording industry welcomes the final warning to Kazaa
IFPI today welcomed a court order forcing Kazaa, the biggest name in internet music piracy, to filter copyrighted music from its system within ten days or cease its operation. (...) "Around the world, the courts are closing the door on peer-to-peer operators that promote copyright theft on their networks. This is good news for millions of consumers who are now turning to the hundreds of sites where they can get music online in a way that respects the copyrights of artists, musicians and producers."

[VIDEO] Hollywood sluit pact met BitTorrent-maker
Filmstudio's hebben een overeenkomst gesloten met Bram Cohen, de maker van BitTorrent. Cohen belooft alle links naar piraatversies van films te verwijderen uit de zoekresultaten van BitTorrent.com. (...) De maker van de BitTorrent-technologie heeft zich in het verleden al vaker uitgesproken tegen piraterij. De belangenvereniging van filmstudio's MPAA toonde zich verheugd over de houding van Cohen en zijn bedrijf en noemde het "een voorbeeld" voor anderen.

iTunes 'outsells' US music stores
Download retailer iTunes now sells more music in the US than some of the country's biggest traditional retailers, according to analysts. (..) NPD compared 12 iTunes separate song downloads to one album purchase at an ordinary retail store. iTunes beat Tower Records, Borders, and Sam Goody, the survey said.

Sony BMG Sued Over CD's With Anti-Piracy Software

Students aim to stop music piracy by peers
The recording industry is turning to students at the University of Pittsburgh to help pull the plug on the illegal downloading of music on college campuses. (...) "The goal of this particular campaign is to have students examine various ways to discourage illegal downloading and CD burning, and encourage students to turn instead to legal music sources," said Jenni Engebretsen, spokeswoman for the Washington, D.C.-based recording industry group.

Hong Kong music industry launches legal battle against illegal online music file-sharing
The companies are seeking a court order asking Internet service providers to disclose personal details of 22 individuals who allegedly uploaded copyrighted music files onto the Internet, said Ricky Fung, chief executive of the Hong Kong branch of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

iTunes price rise a cert - EMI boss
EMI Music's chief executive Alain Levy has said that there's now a consensus that the price of hit songs will rise on digital download sites. Apple charges 99 cents per song on its iTunes Music Store regardless of the song's popularity - something that the industry is keen to change. (...) Sony haalt miljoenen cd's terug
Platenmaatschappij Sony haalt enkele miljoenen cd's met een omstreden kopieerbeveiliging terug uit de winkels. Een woordvoerder heeft berichten daarover in de Amerikaanse media bevestigd. De 'XCP copy protection' staat op cd's van onder anderen Natasha Bedingfield, Celine Dion en Neil Diamond. In totaal gaat het om ongeveer vijftig titels, waarvan meer dan 4,7 miljoen cd's zijn verdeeld.

Wereldwijd offensief tegen muziekpiraten
Zweden, Argentinië, Zwitserland, Hongkong en Singapore: dat zijn de vijf nieuwe landen waar de Internationale Fonografische Industrie (Ifpi) rechtszaken begint tegen mensen die muziek aanbieden op het internet (,,uploaders'') en daardoor het auteursrecht schenden. Music industry launches new Internet piracy crackdown
The music industry's top lobby group on Tuesday launched a new wave of legal action against the illegal sharing of music over the Internet, which it says hits sales and steals money from music artists. High-speed college network closes
A file-swapping network popular with US students that used a superfast internet research network has closed down. It follows repeated legal pressure from the entertainment industry. The i2Hub network took advantage of the Internet2 research network which connects some 207 US universities. (...) The i2Hub network was of particular concern to the entertainment industry as it allowed users to download large files in seconds. The service was set up to allow students to share textbooks and research papers, but quickly become used by many for sharing films and music.

Biggest wave of actions yet announced against illegal file-sharing
File-sharers in Sweden, Switzerland, Argentina, Hong Kong and Singapore are for the first time at risk of criminal penalties and payment of damages in an international campaign that has already seen thousands of people - the majority of them young men between the ages of 20 and 30 - pay sums of US$3,000 or more for uploading copyrighted music on peer-to-peer networks (p2p).

Sony BMG pulls CD software

Viruses use Sony anti-piracy CDs
Virus writers are exploiting Sony's controversial anti-piracy software to hide their malicious creations. In late October Sony was found to be using stealth techniques to hide software that stopped some of its CDs being illegally copied. Now three virus variants have been found that use the Sony software to evade detection by anti-virus programs.

RIAA Praises New Department Of Justice Proposal To Safeguard Intellectual Property
Today, during a speech before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Anti-Counterfeiting and Piracy Summit, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced a broad legislative proposal entitled the "Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2005." The package proposes strengthening penalties for repeat copyright criminals, expanding criminal intellectual property protection, and adding critical investigative tools for both criminal and civil enforcement.

Sony hit by lawsuits over root kit
Sony BMG is facing a class action suit from Californian consumers who claim the music giant's rootkit DRM technology damaged their computers and breaks three separate Californian laws. The suit asks the court to stop Sony selling any more CDs containing the rootkit and seeks compensation for damage already done.

Lennon's music to hit Net, but not on iTunes
In December the entire solo catalog of the late rock icon John Lennon will be made available for Internet download for the first time, his record label said Wednesday. The digital release of Lennon's collection makes him the first former Beatle whose whole body of solo work has been made commercially available on legitimate online music services, EMI Music said. The Lennon material will be sold by such online music services as Napster, Rhapsody, MSN Music and Yahoo Music Unlimited. Zanger The Darkness onderschept eigen album op eBay
Justin Hawkins, de zanger van de Britse rockgroep The Darkness, heeft 350 Britse pond (ongeveer 520 euro) betaald voor zijn eigen album, zo heeft de BBC vandaag gemeld. Eén maand voor de nieuwe cd ,,One Way Ticket to Hell... And Back'' zou uitkomen, bood een van de gelukkigen die de cd in avant-première hadden gekregen het muziekschijfje te koop aan op de veilingsite eBay. Hawkins kon het schijfje onderscheppen door er zelf op te bieden.

Uitstel heffingen op MP3 spelers en DVD harddiskrecorders moet afstel worden!
De brancheverenigingen ICT~Office en Fiar zijn fel tegen heffingen op mp3-spelers en dvd harddisk recorders. Hoewel het de bedoeling was dat op 1 januari 2006 deze heffingen zouden komen, heeft vandaag de SONT (Stichting Onderhandelingen Thuiskopievergoeding) deze beslissing niet genomen. Blijkbaar is de SONT er niet van overtuigd, dat de door haar gevolgde procedure juridisch, maatschappelijk en cijfermatig voldoende zorgvuldig is geweest.

Last waltz for Grokster
File-swapping company Grokster has agreed to stop distributing its peer-to-peer software, following a $50 million legal settlement announced Monday with Hollywood studios and record labels. (...) Geen ondoorzichtig besluit over onduidelijke kopieerheffing
SP-Kamerleden Ewout Irrgang en Arda Gerkens hebben ministers Donner en Brinkhorst om opheldering gevraagd over de voorgestelde kopieerheffing op MP3-spelers en andere digitale informatiedragers. A Hong Kong man has been jailed for three months for film piracy after he shared movie files over the internet. (...) The authorities in Hong Kong hope that Chan's three-month sentence will deter others. But the BBC's Hong Kong correspondent Chris Hogg says that since April when Chan was first charged and his case was widely publicised, there has been no noticeable impact on the number of files being shared over the internet.

Tot 25 euro kopieerheffing op mp3-speler
Producenten en importeurs van mp3-spelers krijgen mogelijk al snel te maken met een kopieerheffing die afhankelijk van de opslagcapaciteit varieert van 80 eurocent tot 25 euro. Samsung not entering online music business

Sony Patch Reveals Its Anti-Piracy Files on PCs
Sony Corp.'s music division said Wednesday it is distributing a free software patch to reveal hidden files that were automatically installed on hard drives when some of its music CDs were played on personal computers. The offending technology was designed to thwart music piracy but prompted a chorus of criticism.

Sony Rootkits your computer
Sony rootkits systems when you put a CD in to play it, a prospect that is both disturbing and scary at the same time. If you thought the record companies were not evil enough, this should be yet another cold splash of water in your face. According to Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals, he was testing out his new rootkit scanner when he found one on his machine.
