Music piracy research - news archive
Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. You'll find 2721 articles related to music and video piracy (with special attention to articles from Belgium and the Netherlands) originating from 526 unique (web)sources. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

The Canadian Recording Industry Association is calling on Ottawa to make sure Canada's copyright law is up to par after an Australian court ruled popular file-swapping network Kazaa was illegal. An Australian court on Monday ruled that the managers of peer-to-peer software Kazaa had authorized users to infringe on music copyrights and directed them to modify the application to reduce the practice. (...) Kazaa can remain in operation, Wilcox said, if the software maker meets either of two conditions. First, "non-optional key-word filter technology" would need to be included in current versions of the software received by new users and in future versions of the software and if "maximum pressure" was exerted on existing users to upgrade to a new version containing the technology. Music download market to heat up
Two of the UK's biggest High Street music stores are to launch download services, to compete in a market dominated by PC and software firms. Virgin launches its service on Friday 2 September with HMV launching its rival HMV Digital service three days later. Both rely on a subscription model where users can listen to any music - as long as they keep paying a monthly fee. Apple's iTunes service, in contrast, asks users to pay per track or album, but sets no time limit. HMV and Virgin hope that by leveraging their brands, the new services will tempt older music lovers away from CDs and into the digital age of downloading.
