Nokia brengt een nieuwe reeks multimediatelefoons uit. De nieuwe lijn zal door het leven gaan als Nseries en een van de eerste toestellen wordt een telefoon met een ingebouwde harde schijf van 4 gigabyte. Door samen te werken met muziekverkoper LoudEye en - baanbrekend voor de Finnen - met Microsoft, wil Nokia een totaaloplossing op muziekgebied leveren. (...) Nokia verwacht duidelijk het meest van de N91, de gsm met ingebouwde harde schijf. De naam "iPod" valt niet meteen, maar het is duidelijk dat Nokia consumenten wil lokken die anders een van de spelertjes van Apple zou aanschaffen.

725 Additional Illegal File Sharers Cited In New Wave of Copyright Infringement Lawsuits

As part of its ongoing effort to protect the work of record labels, musicians, writers, producers and others from theft through illegal downloading, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), on behalf of the major record companies, today announced a new wave of copyright infringement lawsuits against 725 illegal file sharers. The "John Doe" suits filed today cite the individuals for illegally distributing copyrighted music on the Internet via unauthorized peer-to-peer services such as KaZaa, eDonkey and Grokster. The litigations were filed in federal district courts across the country, including in: California, Colorado, Georgia, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Bush signs law targeting P2P pirates

File-swappers who distribute a single copy of a prerelease movie on the Internet can be imprisoned for up to three years, according to a bill that President Bush signed into law on Wednesday. Judge: Schools don't have to help music industry group

A federal magistrate has ruled that two North Carolina universities do not have to reveal the identities of two students accused of sharing copyrighted music on the Internet. The music industry (...) filed subpoenas in November 2003 asking for help identifying a North Carolina State University student who used the name "CadillacMan" and a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill student who used the name "hulk." Record labels count cost of music piracy

British record labels lost the equivalent of £650m to illegal computer downloads over the last two years, according to the music industry's trade body. The British Phonographic Industry said record labels lost £376m last year - up nearly £100m on the £278m they lost the year before - in the music business's first attempt to quantify the financial cost of illegal downloads. A two-year study by research group TNS showed that music fans would have spent £1.5bn on recorded music between 2002-2004, but because of downloads spent only £858m, according to the BPI.
