Music piracy research - news archive
Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. You'll find 2721 articles related to music and video piracy (with special attention to articles from Belgium and the Netherlands) originating from 526 unique (web)sources. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

Geen prijsverlagingen voor Nederlandse muzieksites
Als reactie op de komst van Napster in Groot-Brittannië verlaagde online muziekleverancier OD2 onlangs zijn prijzen. Volgens persbureau Reuters zullen de prijzen hier [Nederland] zelfs halveren. Ditzelfde OD2 heeft ook in Nederland flinke voet aan de grond. Hier zal de Engelse stap echter niet gevolgd worden.

Italy has made transferring content via the Internet without the permission of the copyright holder a criminal offence. The Italian parliament yesterday voted in favour of imposing jail sentences of up to three years on anyone caught uploading or downloading unauthorised copyright material to and from the Net. (...) Wie is bang voor Napster?
Napster, de gesel van de platenfirma's, is terug, maar ditmaal als een legale on line platenwinkel. Die voorspelt dat de gewone platenwinkels over tien jaar verleden tijd zijn. Toen Shawn Fanning in 1999 Napster oprichtte, veroorzaakte hij paniek bij platenfirma's. Naar schatting zestig miljoen gebruikers haalden via zijn site gratis muziek van het net. (...) De lancering van de dienst wordt ondersteund door een marketingcampagne en een gratis proefaanbod van zeven dagen. Daarbij wordt vooral benadrukt dat Napster compatibel is met meer dan zestig draagbare muziekspelers, terwijl de iPod van Apple alleen van iTunes liedjes kan downloaden. (...)
