Music piracy ('muziekpiraterij' in dutch) is a very complex phenomenon to comprehend. These pages wishes to address all of you who are interested in music piracy in a broad sense. You'll find 2721 articles related to music and video piracy (with special attention to articles from Belgium and the Netherlands) originating from 526 unique (web)sources. I started archiving news articles about music and video piracy since 1999. In 2001 I wrote a scientific dissertation about music piracy for my Master's degree in Communication Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. This dissertation incluced a survey among 1500 individuals.

iTunes loses 95 million songs

Pepsi promotion doesn't quite go as planned. Apple said on Wednesday that about 5 million free songs have been given away through a Pepsi promotion, far fewer than the 100 million tracks that could have been redeemed. (...) "We feel we have a lot of momentum," Jobs said on a conference call, noting that the company is now selling music at a rate of 2.7 million songs per week, or 140 million songs per year. That's up slightly from the rate Jobs touted in March, when the company had sold 50 million tracks.

Music industry sues 477 more computer users

The recording industry sued 477 more computer users Wednesday, including dozens of college students at schools in 11 states, accusing them of illegally sharing music across the Internet. (...) CNET launches music download service

Online technology company CNET Networks on Monday launched a free digital music service, allowing people to search and download what it said were thousands of songs contributed by independent and unsigned artists. Van Kooten bestrijdt kwaad met kwaad

Integendeel, van Kooten trakteert iedere koper op een tweede cd, waarop de volledige versie versie van de langspeler in het digitale muziekbestandsformaat mp3 staat. "Voor iedereen die de cd koopt, hebben we al een exemplaartje in mp3 gebrand. Die kan hij of zij dan aan een hardleerse downloader of kopieerder weggeven. Met de duidelijke boodschap natuurlijk, dat hij volgende keer de cd zelf koopt." Van Kooten heeft op zijn cd ook een nummertje aan het kopieergeweld gewijd: 'De ziekte van download' -tevens als single gereleast.

RealNetworks wil pact sluiten met Apple

Invoering heffing auteursrechten op lege DVD's

Op dit moment worden op audiocasettes heffingen van 10 eurocent per uur geheven, voor audiocds komt dit neer op 23 eurocent per uur en voor datacds 12 cent per uur. Deze heffingen worden ingevoerd ter compensatie van het recht dat bestaat in België waardoor binnen familiale kring rechtmatig kopieën mogen gemaakt worden van audio-visuele werken. Voor de dvd zal een hoger bedrag (59 eurocent) worden geheven. De reden die daarvoor aangevoerd wordt, is de hogere capaciteit per drager. Is deze heffing oneerlijk voor mensen die professioneel dvds gebruiken om eigen werk op te slaan of te archiveren? Het antwoord van Auvibel is daarin duidelijk: "met deze redenering werd reeds rekening gehouden bij het bepalen van de heffingen". Daarom ook dat de muziekindustrie dit bedrag te laag vindt. Bij de invoering van deze nieuwe heffing zullen eerst de fabrikanten en invoerders voor de markt aangesproken worden. De heffingen worden daarna verdeeld tussen de verschillende sectoren (audio & video). Daarna vindt de verdeling plaats tussen auteurs, producenten en artiesten. De heffing op DVD schijfjes werd reeds beslist door de regering op 20 februari 2004 op voorstel van minister van economie Fientje Moerman, maar werd in feite pas vandaag bekend en zal vanzelfsprekend niet van kracht zijn vooraleer dit gepubliceerd wordt in het Belgisch Staatsblad.
